DYNAMIC CONTROL VALVE SYSTEM ADAPTED FOR INFLATABLE RESTRAINT SYSTEMS FOR VEHICLES

A dynamic control valve system (10) adapted for inflatable restraint systems for vehicles. The system includes a control valve (12) having an inlet (18) in fluid communication with an inlet (22) in an airbag (24). The control valve includes a valve member (32) actuatable between a flow preventing position and a flow permissive position. High pressure fluid is supplied through the control valve (20) and on to the airbag (24). The control valve (12) includes a valve spool (32) which cooperates with a valve casing (30) to define a plurality of flow paths. Consequently, the actuation of the valve member (32) is substantially independent of the forces produced by the high pressure fluid flow. The valve member's actuation may be based on a vehicle parameter such as vehicle deceleration or acceleration, or an occupant parameter such as presence, weight, or occupant position.
