A compact multi-purpose cartoner (10), with multiple overlying beds (14, 15), of common polygonal, say "D"-shaped, profile, supporting respective peripheral conveyors (16, 17), integrates sequential mechanised carton erection manual fill and mechanised closure operations, upon discrete sides of the beds, with provision for relative bed spacing adjustment, to accommodate different carton depths.
