Determination of effects on respiratory system without using animal models

The effect on an action on a respiratory system is determined by introducing a preparation comprising a respiratory system into an apparatus in such a way that the apical side of the preparation is in contact with a first fluid and the basal side of the preparation is in contact with a second fluid, exposing the preparation to the action, and analyzing the first and/or second fluid. An Independent claim is also included for an apparatus for performing the above method, comprising a chamber that is divided into two parts by introducing the preparation so that fluid in one part is kept separate from fluid in the other part.
