The present invention relates to a device which is used for surrounding a cylindrical workpiece by shape-connection in order to apply a torque in a desired manner on said workpiece about the longitudinal axis thereof. The device includes at least two clamping jaws which are applied on the profile of the workpiece. This invention is characterised in that an energy source is used for actuating the clamping jaws so that they can grasp the workpiece at least partially by force connection due to the application of a clamping force from said energy source. This invention is further characterised in that a torque is applied on the workpiece about the longitudinal axis thereof when said workpiece is surrounded by force connection by the clamping jaws. The force generating the torque is supplied by the energy source and the clamping force is proportional to the torque applied.
