USE OF 17 beta -ESTRADIOL, ANALOGS AND DERIVATIVES THEREOF FOR THE TREATMENT OF DIABETES MELLITUS AND ITS MANIFESTATIONS

Diabetes Mellitus is a trouble of the homeostasis of glucose and is characterized by a reduction of secretion of insulin induced by glucose. Insulin is a synthesized peptide hormone which is stored and released by beta cells of the pancreas Langerhans islets. The use of 17 beta -estradiol, its analogs and derivatives in the treatment of Diabetes Mellitus has its origin in the effects of oestrogens on the insulin secretion mechanisms. The addition of 17 beta -estradiol, its analogs and derivatives potentiate the secretion of insulin for glucose concentrations higher than 7 mM without producing effects in glucose absence conditions or for concentrations lower than the threshold (5-7 mM), thereby eliminating the risk of serious hypoglycemia, the most serious complication in widely used antidiabetic treatments.
