A method for transmitting data from a plurality of data sources to corresponding data sinks whereby the data is transmitted in the form of data packets (54, VC-4) via a transmission channel. Said data is divided up into packets before transmission. After transmission it is retrieved and outputted to the corresponding data sinks. A data packet (54; VC-4) comprises a control information area (POH) and a useful data area (C-4). Interrelated data packets (54; VC-4) form a chain of data packets and are marked with a first bit sequence (J1) in the control information area. This sequence is the same for all data packets belonging to the same chain. The data packets belonging to a chain are also characterised by a second bit sequence (16) in the control information area. The second bit sequence (16) corresponds to a consecutive number for each data packet (54;VC-4) belonging to the chain.
