The engine has offset banks of cylinders, camshafts and a common crankshaft. The valve control, which is variable, acts on each cylinder bank (2, 3) by means of camshafts (19, 20) driven via a coupling transmission (23, 24). The coupling transmission can be adjusted to alter the phase position of the camshafts. The coupling transmission is in the region of the rear-offset end face of one of the cylinder banks.
