A winder for raising and lowering a window in a vehicle door comprises shaft 120 rotated by handle 199 which rotates grooved drum 180 so that wire wound thereon moves the window. Shaft 120 passes through coiled wire brake spring 140, which expands against brake drum 111 to hold the window still, and through spiral balance spring 170 which counterbalances the window. The sequence of brake spring 140, balance spring 170 and winding drum 180, along shaft 120 from its handle end, is said to aid assembly and to place the two cable runs extending from drum 180 in a better position relative to the window pane.
