The invention is a porous carbon body (12, 14) and method of manufacture of the body for usage in a fuel cell. The porous carbon body (12, 14) comprises an electrically conductive graphite powder in an amount of between 40%-60% by weight of the body; a carbon fiber in an amount of between 20%-40% by weight of the body; a hydrophobic binder in an amount of between 10%-30% by weight of the body; wherein the body has a mean pore size of greater than 2.0 microns, and an open porosity of greater than 25%; and, wherein the pores in the body are rendered partially hydrophilic by incorporation of a hydrophilic rendering compound onto an interior surface of the pores. the compound is a metal oxide, hydroxide, oxyhydroxide, oxyhydroxide hydrate, or oxide hydrate. The porous carbon body (12, 14) achieves long term chemical stability for operation in a PEM fuel cell. |
