A socket 26 can mate with two different types of plug, 210 and 110. Portions 213 and 113 mate with different contacts in the socket 25, and use different data communications. In the described embodiment, the socket is used in audio equipment 1, and allows the connection of either a pair of headphones 100 which have a remote controller 103, or another piece of audio equipment 200. When the headphones are used, the remote controller communicates with the equiment using a TSB protocol through plug part 113 which is integral with the headphone plug 112. When plug 210 is used, the two audio devices communicate using IEEE 1394.
