Tank with submerged bodies and backwash means for biological treatment of waste water

A waste water biological treatment assembly consists of a rectangular basin (1) with e.g. two or more rows of vertical panels (20) acting as the substrate for colonies of bacteria. The gaps between adjacent panels are closed at the sides, and open at the top and bottom. The lower panel edge has a gap between it and the basin floor. Each row of panels (20) is separated from the adjacent row by a gap with a vertical hanging beam (34) from an overhead gantry (4). The beam (34) base bears a horizontal array of water jets (30) which flush the panels at regular intervals.
