The invention relates to a method of automatically cutting material webs (3) on which individual images (30, 31, 32) are present. The invention also relates to a cutting unit suitable for performing the method and to a correspondingly prepared material web (3). The method according to the invention comprises the steps of the machine-reading of data (33, 34, 35) previously applied to the material web (3) and relating to the images (30, 31, 32) present on the material web (3), adjusting at least one cutting means (5, 12) for cutting the material web (3) in accordance with the read-out data (33, 34, 35) and cutting the material web (3) by using the adjusted cutting means (5, 12).
