PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical fiber amplifier which is possessed of a advantages such as a low-noise figure of dual-stage design, a wide range of variable gain, and an advantage in cost as a single pump laser and easily controlled. SOLUTION: A dual-stage doped fiber amplifier is provided, where a single pump laser and a possible power splitter 110 are used to pump both amplifier stages. The passive splitter 110 couples a first portion of the power output of the single pump laser to a first stage amplifier 120 and a second portion of the pump power to a second stage amplifier 130. In this manner, the performance characteristics of the amplifier can be controlled through the utilization of a single pump source. |
