The present invention is directed to a method of making an active tyrosinase which comprises the steps of transforming E. coli cells or a unicellular organism with a DNA fragment containing a coding sequence for tyrosinase and a DNA fragment containing a coding sequence for an activator protein and growing the transformed E. coli cells or unicellular organism in a suitable medium.
