PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an abnormality detection method and device capable of reducing CPU loads at a standby edge and reducing a memory capacity. SOLUTION: Retrieval and collation with the contents of a packet storage means 11 are performed only by a leading cell and a final cell selected in an ATM cell selection means 14 among received ATM cells, matching contents are eliminated from the packet storage means 11 and a state, where the packet storage means 11 is full, is decided as an abnormality of an active edge. Since CPCS-PDU is generated from MAC-PDU received from a LAN by the standby edge, and only a leading cell part and a final cell part at the time of making the CPCS-PDU into the ATM cells further are taken out as key information and stored in a table, as compared to the conventional method of storing the CPCS-PDU in the table as it is, the memory capacity for the storage of the table is substantially reduced.
