PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a friction sliding member having durability under adversed conditions of high temp./high and capable of friction sliding in a high friction coefficient against an opponent member in a lubrication oil by providing the member with a metal fiber and hard particle dispersed metal powder and forming a sintered compact having a specified porosity ratio and a porosity hole diameter. SOLUTION: A base of a metal fiber 4 and hard particle dispersed type metal powder 3, in which a hard particle 3 is dispersed in a metal base, are sintered/joined, a sintered metal friction member, which has a porosity ratio of 20-60 vol%, an average porosity diameter of 30-200μm and preferably a porosity ratio of 25-75 area% of the face in contact with an opponent member, is obtained. This metal fiber preferably has a content of 15-60 wt.% with an aspect ratio of 3 to >=30. Further the hard particle disperesed type metal particle preferably has a ratio of 40-80% and is produced by a mechanical ironing method. The hard particle preferably has a ratio of 40-80% and a hardness of >=400 micro Vickers. This friction member can generate a large friction force without forming a contact boundary face with an opponent member.
