PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a power module stop gently, without causing damages to a power converter and its load in when a failure occurs, for which an emergency stop is not required. SOLUTION: An intelligent power module is constituted of given protective circuits 2, 3, 4 which are stored either in a package modularizing a semiconductor switch 1 and a gate circuit 5 which turns on or off the semiconductor switch 1, or arranged in the proximity of the package. Provided in this power module are failure determining means 8-1, 8-2, which determine whether the kind of failure protected by the protective circuits is a serious failure or minor failure if the protective circuits operate, and an OR circuit 8-3, a timer 9-1 and a gate block circuit 10, which give a gate blocking signal immediately to the gate circuit 5 if the kind of the failure is determined as a serious one, and give the signal to the gate circuit 5 in a preset period of time if it is determined as a minor one. |
