The digital signal coding method includes dividing signal into blocks, measuring an activity for each block and forming at least a subassembly of blocks according to a formation criteria. It involves determining an activity level and forming several block classes. These are linked to form a group of blocks which are coded by using universal trellis coded quantification of groups of coefficients extracted from these blocks.- DETAILED DESCRIPTION - The digital signal coding method includes the following stages: - divide (E4) the signal into blocks (Bi,n); - measure (E6) an activity (Ai,n) for each block; - form (E7) at least a subassembly of blocks according to a formation criteria; - determine (E8) an activity level as a function of an average of the activities of the blocks of a subassembly; form (E9) from several block classes at least a class having blocks whose activity is less than a particular level and at least another class having blocks whose activity is greater than a particular level; - link (E14) the blocks of each of the classes formed in the preceding stage so as to form a group of blocks; - code (E15) these block groups by using universal trellis coded quantification of groups of coefficients extracted from these blocks
