PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal electrooptical device having good memory property, excellent driving characteristics, threshold characteristics and contrast characteristics by using a chevron-type smectic layer, arranging the layer structure at a specified position and specifying the angle between the normal line of the layer and the substrate and the angle between the normal line of the layer and the alignment treatment direction of the alignment layer. SOLUTION: A chevron-type smectic layer 1 is formed on a substrate 3 under the following conditions. Namely, when the layer 1 is divided into the upper part and the lower part along the chevron interface 5, the angleα1 between a substrate L3 contact with the upper part of the layer and the normal line L1 of the layer in the upper part is controlled to within±10 deg. except 0 deg.. Similarly, the angleα2 between a substrate L4 and the normal line L2 of the layer in the lower part is controlled to within±10 deg. except 0 deg.. The angleβ1 between the alignment treatment direction L5 of the alignment layer in contact with the upper part and the normal line L1 of the layer of the upper part is controlled to within±10 deg. except 0 deg.. Similarly, the angleβ2 between the alignment treatment direction L6 of the alignment layer and the normal line L2 of the layer in the lower part is controlled to within±10 deg. except 0 deg..
