A refractory moulding consists of perlite and/or vermiculite, metakaolin, sodium or potassium silicate and finely distributed silica of high specific surface. A refractory moulding consists of 2-20 (preferably 5-10) wt.% metakaolin, 0.5-10 (preferably 2-5) wt.% finely distributed high specific surface silicon dioxide, 25-54 wt.% sodium or potassium silicate and balance (30-70 wt.%) perlite and/or vermiculite, the silicon dioxide having been obtained from ferrosilicon or metallic silicon production.
