Apatite-glass ceramic useful as a biomaterial

An apatite-glass ceramic having needle-form apatite crystals as the sole or main crystalline phase is such that the crystalline phase comprises (by wt. on an oxide basis) 20-50% SiO2, 8-25% Al2O3, 6-20% CaO, 6-20% P2O5, 4-10% F<-> and 6-20% R2O, where R2O contains an alkali oxide alone or as a mixture, the ceramic being obtained from molten glasses at 1,400-1,600 deg C.
