The armrest(14) comprises a pneumatically height-adjustable support(16) connected to a compressor and provided with several interconnected air chambers(18). An airbag(22) is fitted in the door trim(10) below the support. An additional airbag(24) may be fitted behind the support and is locked against deployment if the support is in the inflated state. An airbag may be built into the support. If an airbag is fitted behind the support its outlet lies higher than the armrest when the support is in its inflated state.
