The cleaning apparatus (RV) has a cleaning medium circulation system including a distillation unit (DS) for purifying the cleaning medium (RMH). An Independent claim is also included for a method of cleaning cable engineering tools, especially using the above apparatus, comprising circulating the tool cleaning medium in a circuit in which the medium is continuously distilled for purification. Preferred Apparatus: The distillation unit (DS) has a heater (HZ) which is used to evaporate the cleaning medium (RMH) and which is associated with cooling elements (KS) for cleaning medium droplet condensation. The circulation circuit and the distillation unit (DS) are positioned within a closed housing (GH) including a work chamber (RR) which can be opened from outside and which has a base (BD) fitted with open cleaning tanks (KE1).
