Method and apparatus for relating two coordinate systems for purposes of wear measurement on the lining of a metallurgical vessel

Measurement of the lining is carried out at specific reference points on the lining of a metallurgical vessel. Before the metallurgical vessel (20) is used, the position of at least three reference points (P1, ..., P4, ...) is determined to establish an object coordinate system for the vessel, and measurements on the vessel lining by a system (10) with use of electromagnetic radiation are carried out. After use of the vessel the positions of the reference points are determined by comparison of the position of the object coordinate system relative to the coordinate system of the measuring system (10). This in done by projection of the reference points onto the plane of an optical identification unit (8). Afterwards determination of the coordinates of the reference points and measurements on the vessel lining are carried out automatically by the measuring system (10). The apparatus includes at least one optical identificaton unit (8), as well as means by which the sender/receiver unit (1) is automatically directed to the reference points.
