The method involves sending out a node number and ID report signal from each unit connected to the communication system, to the data processing unit. The node number of each unit is tested for its uniqueness by the data processing unit. If the number is not unique, a unique number is set according to the ID of the unit by the data processing unit. The node numbers are acknowledged by the data processing unit. The units confirm the node numbers to the processing unit and the units are accepted into the communication system. The units are medical items, for example a patient table (1), HF scalpels (2-5) and cold lights (6,7) connected to a communication system (8). The system is connected to a micro-controller (10) on a PC card. Data exchange is via the system bus (8).
