A procedure is described for operating an electrical illumination installation (24) with at least one gas discharge lamp with a ballast apparatus wired in front of it, preferably with several gas discharge lamps (26,28) with differently designed ballast apparatus wired in front of them and wired in parallel on the input side by means of an AC source.- DETAILED DESCRIPTION - The steps are as follows.- (a) The AC source (20) is connected to the illumination installation and the lamp(s) is/are started. (b) The AC source remains connected for a given time until the installation has a stable state.- (c) A controllable and programmable inverter (34) is switched on between the AC source and the installation. It first outputs for a short time an alternating voltage corresponding to the that of the AC source.- (d) The current that flows through the installation determined by a corresponding measured value-detector, and lies at a control input of the inverter.- (e) The inverter is designed for the output of output voltages with voltage patterns that differ from the voltage patterns of the AC source at least in one feature, e.g., period, curve shape.
