The system is equipped with a storage area with a number of storage positions, at least one entry and removal station which is stationary with respect to the storage area, and at least one transport arrangement for material movements of longitudinal item between the storage area and the at least one entry and removal station. A control arrangement, preferably a memory-programmable control, is provided for operating the transport unit, and at least one computer is connected with the control arrangement for the administration of the material with respect to storage position, material type, number of pieces, and material-specific total length. The computer issues removal- and entry orders, as well as providing instructions for the movement processes to the entry and removal station.
