Biocompatible composite material comprises one or more scleroproteins or their hydrolysis products and/or glycosaminoglycans homogeneously embedded in an inorganic gel. An Independent claim is also included for the production of the composite material by preparing a sol by hydrolysis of metal oxides or halides, adding scleroproteins or their hydrolysis products and/or glycosaminoglycans, and gelling the sol.
