Picket fence bar codes are synchronously printed using a dot matrix printer operated according to the formula: (ni - 1).mi(v/f) + d = i.w, where v = substrate velocity, w = barcode unit modular width, i, m are integers, d = dot diameter, f = printhead operating frequency, n = number of dots required for bar width. Ladder bar codes are printed analogously according to the formula: (ni - 1). p + d = iw, where p = dot pitch of the printhead.
