The crank assembly can include a connecting rod (11) to be attached to the piston of the engine. The rod (11) is attached to an external gear (22) which meshingly engages with an internal gear (23). The gear (22) via a cam follower (19) also engages a cam member (21). In a preferred form the cam member (21) and internal gear (23) have a linear portion corresponding to the power stroke of an associated piston.
