摘要 A power plant for a motor vehicle has an internal combustion engine (26), an electric motor/generator (28) and an output load (10-24) permanently motively connected to a differential (30). The motor/generator (28) is electrically connected to a rechargeable battery (60) via a control unit (62), which also controls the engine (26) and brakes (72,74,76) on the three ports of the differential (30), in response to signals from various sensors and switches (78). Thus, an infinitely variable speed transmission is provided, without the need for a clutch. The plant can be operated with the engine (26) either (a) in a preferred operating range with respect to fuel consumption and exhaust and noise emissions or (b) not operating. The motor/generator (28) can be used to start the engine (26) without the need for a clutch or the like, and to reverse the vehicle without the need for a reverse-gear gearbox. The engine (26) and motor/generator (28) can be used to generate electricity even when the vehicle is stationary.
