<p>A series of shafts are drilled in to the contaminated soil and a receiver put in each one. The receiver is full of water and is placed with its opening at the level of the contaminated phase on the surface of the water within the shaft. The level of contaminant in the receiver rises until it contains a preset volume at which point the volume is partially pumped out of the receiver. The water is pumped from the shafts to bring the contaminated phase to the level of the opening, or the receiver is moved in the shaft to bring the opening to the level of the contaminated phase. The receiver contains a set volume of contaminant and when the opening is sufficiently immersed in the water, at least part of the liquid is pumped out, until the opening is no longer immersed in water. Before pumping, water is introduced into the shaft. After pumping, the shaft is allowed to refill with water and contaminants from the contaminated soil. The receiver is put near the bottom of the shaft, or at most 50 cm or 100 cm above the bottom. The shaft wall is permeable to liquids, with an impermeable case at the bottom. The transverse section of the shaft decreases as the bottom is approached. An independent claim is included for an installation to carry out the described process.</p> |
