CARBON-COATED SILICON CARBIDE-BASED INORGANIC FIBER AND ITS PRODUCTION

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce an inorganic fiber suitably usable as a reinforcing fiber of various composite materials by coating a fiber surface of a silicon carbide- based inorganic fiber with a thick carbon layer and providing a thick gradient compositional part between the carbon layer and the silicon carbide-based inorganic fiber and to provide a method for producing the inorganic fiber. SOLUTION: This inorganic fiber is a silicon carbide-based inorganic fiber coated with carbon and has a gradient compositional part having at least 100 nm thickness between a coating carbon layer and the silicon carbide-based inorganic fiber. The silicon carbide-based inorganic fiber is heat-treated in carbon monoxide containing carbon dioxide.
