PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst for producing ethylene oxide in a liquid phase and the producing method and to produce ethylene oxide by oxidizing ethylene in the liquid phase. SOLUTION: The catalyst contains (1) a silver particle, (2) if necessary, one or more kinds of protective agents for the silver particle selected from a group composed of a hydrophilic high polymer, an amphipathic molecule and an anionic compound and (3) if necessary, one or more kinds of metallic compound selected from a group composed of an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal and a rare earth metal. The average particle diameter of the silver particle is preferably <=50 nm and particularly, the silver particle is preferably silver colloid. The catalyst is brought into contact with a ethylene-containing gas to produce ethylene oxide from ethylene in the liquid phase. The producing method of ethylene oxide shows excellent safety and particularly suitable for producing a small quantity of ethylene oxide. |
