PRODUCTION OF 4-CYANOBIPHENYL COMPOUND

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a 4-cyanobiphenyl compound economically, simply and industrially. SOLUTION: (A) Manganese dioxide and trimethylchlorosilane or (B) manganese chloride is added to an ether-based organic solvent. A phenylmagnesium chloride compound of formula I (R<1> is a hydrogen atom, a 1-6C straight-chain alkyl or a 1-6C straight-chain alkoxy group) is reacted with p-chlorobenzonitrile in the ether-based organic solvent solution to give a 4-cyanobiphenyl compound of formula II.
