PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a 1,2-diol derivative with a small amount of a formed by-product in high selectivity by oxidizing a compound having a carbon - carbon double bond in the presence of a specific catalyst. SOLUTION: (B) A compound having a carbon - carbon double bond (preferably an olefin or a cycloolefin) is oxidized with preferably oxygen as an oxidizing agent in the presence of (A) an amide (L)-bridged platinum (III) complex represented by formual I [L is an anionic group comprising R<1> CIONH (R<1> is an orgnaic residue); L<1> and L<2> are each water molecule or a neutral ligand or an anionic group] as a catalyst to thereby afford a 1,2-diol derivative in high selectivity. The component A can be prepared as a crystal by adding and reacting a small excess of Na2 S2 O8 with, e.g. a tetranuclear complex represented by formula II [(n) is 5 or 6] and having a mixed valence of a well- known amide-bridged platinum (II and III) and then adding a small excess of HNO3 and NaNO3 thereto, carrying out a reaction and allowing the resultant compound to stand at ambient temperature.
|
