PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To miniaturize a starter motor and to reduce the weight without forming a special structure in order to reduce starting torque. SOLUTION: In a method for starting an external combustion-type heat gas engine 1, for driving a starter motor 9 connected to a crank shaft 10 and for starting the operation, the crank shaft 10 is so rotated that a low- temperature side displacer piston 3 may be positioned in the approximately central position C of the piston stroke in relation to a low-temperature side cylinder 44. Next, the low-temperature side displacer piston 3 is positioned in the approximately central position C of the piston stroke for the specified time, the differential pressureΔP between internal pressure of a low-temperature chamber 15 and a crank chamber 47 which are divided by the low-temperature side cylinder 44 and the low-temperature side displacer piston 3 is made to zero, and then the starter motor is driven.
