FIELD: crystal growing. SUBSTANCE: invention is designed to prepare mixture for growing yttrium-aluminum garnet crystals finding use as active media in solid-state lasers as well as for fabricating high-temperature ceramics. Hydrothermal treatment of stoichiometric mixture of yttrium and aluminum oxides is conducted in 1-3% aqueous solutions of activators, in particular, alkali metal and ammonium salts of saturated C<SB>1</SB>-C<SB>3</SB>-organic acids at 270 to 360 C and pressure 56 to 190 atm.
