A method and apparatus for producing a yarn structure of improved properties

A method of manufacturing a chain yarn from a fibrous assembly. The method includes continuously forming a strand of drafted fibre by known means and consolidating and strengthening the strand of drafted fibre so that it can be manipulated and tensioned without further drafting. The fibres are tensioned to consolidate the fibres before initiating a chaining process in a yarn forming zone by engaging the strand with a hooked needle. A half loop is formed in the strand by relative motion of the strand and needle. The half loop is converted into a full loop around the shaft of the needle by further relative motion of the strand and needle. The previously formed full loop is removed from the needle by using a latch on the needle or other known means to pull a newly formed loop through the previously formed loop. The tension on the formed chain-yarn is maintained while continuously removing it from the yarn forming zone.
