In a firing phase the held-back exhaust gas is compressed in the domain of the gas exchange dead center and then expanded. In this phase of the working cycle the firing fuel is injected into the combustion chamber (3) for stabilizing the primary combustion. A control circuit by consideration of the inadvertent RPM and load fluctuations of the engine stabilizes the primary combustion through quantity and injection times of the firing fuel.
