A negative electrode material for an electrode active mass, a negative electrode active mass containing the negative electrode material, and an electrochemical cell containing the negative electrode coated with the negative electrode active mass are provided to improve the power density and energy density of an electrochemical cell such as a lithium secondary battery. A negative electrode material for an electrode active mass comprises an amorphous carbon-based compound; and a scale-like crystalline carbon-based compound in a ratio of 50:50 to 99:1 by weight. Preferably the amorphous carbon-based compound has an average diameter of 8-25 micrometers; and the scale-like crystalline carbon-based compound has an average diameter of 3-10 micrometers and is the graphite-based crystalline carbon of natural graphite and/or artificial graphite having a high degree of graphitization.
