A control unit (9) has a light source (10) which provides an optical beam to a light wave conductor connecting line (8), via a beam divider (11). The connecting line provides light to a sensor (5), where it is focussed at a specific distance within a flowing fluid. Light reflected by particles in the fluid is scattered back into the connecting line and the beam divider conducts it, via a further beam divider (12), to a receiver (13). Volume flow is removed from a vessel (1) via an opening (3) and conveyed via a pump (4). The volume flow is guided past the sensor and flows back into the vessel at a further opening (6). The sensor can be isolated from the fluid by cutoff valves. Fourier transformation of the received signal provides a frequency spectrum representing particle size distribution.
