The surface of a carriageway is locally heated using a radiation source during travel, and the temperature increase is measured using an infrared detector. The ratio of output power of the radiation source to the received IR signal reveals the presence of moisture or ice films or a dry road surface. The radiation source may be a laser or microwave source.
