<p>The method allows increase in the temperature of a bioreaction to a temperature in an optimum temperature range for thermophilic bacteria, which allows the reaction mixture to be held at such a temperature for a sufficient period of time to kill pathogens within a feedstock liquid. A minimum temperature, of at least 45 °C, is maintained by virtue of an autothermic or exothermic reaction between thermophilic bacteria and the nutrient containing feedstock liquid. Additional heating may be imparted to the reaction mixture by virtue of mechanical energy transformed by one or more pumps recirculating liquid within the reaction system or introducing liquid into the system, and/or by expanding at least a part of the reaction mixture through one or more nozzles at a high velocity.</p> |
