A method of monitoring a locality or location e.g. in a motor vehicle or on a manufacturing line, in which the location is illuminated by a light source and photographed by a camera. On the basis of the photograph, information about the position of objects at the location is ascertained, and the photograph is compared with at least one reference image. The light source is specifically an infra-red (IR) light source, or more specifically a laser beam.
