<p>An underground electric cable comprises at least two cable lengths (2, 4) and, interconnecting said lengths (2, 4) to effect electrical continuity therebetween, a joint (6) located underground, said joint (6) incorporating therein switch means, such as fault-detection switches or vacuum circuit breakers, operable to make and break for circuit containing said cable lengths (2, 4). Operation of the switch means may be automatic in the event of predetermined conditions arising at the joint (6), or alternatively the switch means may be operable selectively by control means (8) from a remote location, e.g. at ground level.</p> |
