A procedure for generating a fault signal which indicates the operating state of an optical display device (13) for showing the retardation state of a car, has computer devices (11) by means or which switching devices (12) are controlled. They have variable switch states depending on the determined retardation state. Depending on the switch state of the switching devices, the display devices are subjected to current and/or voltage. Then, when no retardation state is determined, the switching devices are controlled by the computer devices at specified time instants for a specified long duration. During this duration, the current and/or voltage drop across the display devices is determined and called upon for generating the fault signal.
