The foot-operated operating device (1) has a signal source in the form of a conductive elastic body, providing a control signal dependent on the operating path, via a pair of contact surfaces on its opposing sides coupled to respective electrical leads. The electrical resistance between the contacts is altered depending on their relative spacing. The leads are coupled to a measuring transducer providing a control signal representative of the electrical resistance.
