A fuel injection quantity control system for a diesel engine has: a device to store a specified running characteristic function indicating a relationship between an engine speed and a fuel injection quantity for all gas pedal opening positions including an opening position of 0%. The system also has a device to assess an instantaneous state of the engine, a device to calculate a basic injection quantity from the running characteristic function that corresponds to an instantaneous gas pedal opening position and engine speed, a device to judge whether the car is in a certain idle state or not from of a running state, a controller for feedback control of a fuel injection quantity by using a deviation of an actual engine speed from a setpoint engine speed as input parameters for the control unit, when the car finds itself in the idle state and a learning device to calculate a learning value on the basis of an output value of the controller for each load state when the car is found in the idle state and to store the learning value.
