The engaging drive assembly or mating assembly has at least one clamping protrusion (48) engaging with the other drive assembly. The clamping protrusion extends parallel to the rotational axis of the drive shaft, and the mating drive assembly (50) producing a clamping force is formed in a direction which lies in a plane orthogonal to the rotational axis. The protrusion of the one drive assembly is clamped in the other by means of a clamping piston (60) housed in a cylinder (52), with the torque converter providing the source of fluid pressure for the piston. An Independent claim is included for a drive system which includes the proposed unit connecting the drive shaft and torque converter.
